SUNDERLAND have appointed former Bristol City manager Lee Johnson as their next head coach after Danny Cowley and Sol Campbell both missed out on the role.

The 39-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to replace the sacked Phil Parkinson.

And Johnson told the official club website: “Speaking to Kristjaan (Speakman), Jim (Rodwell) and the owners, I was absolutely blown away by their plans and dreams for the club. I can see so much potential.

Former Concord Rangers boss Cowley told Echosport he was keen on the role last week while ex Southend United manager Campbell was also believed to have been interviewed.
