SOUTHEND United defender Shaun Hobson is keeping his focus firmly in house as the Shrimpers fight to secure their Football League status.

Blues are currently bottom of the League Two table having triumphed just once so far this season.

But Hobson, who helped Southend secure a 0-0 draw at Stevenage on Saturday, is doing all he can to remain upbeat.

“We have to stay positive and I don’t look at the league table,” said Hobson.

“You just concentrate on yourself and what you need to do for the team.

“We don’t listen to outside noise because that can kill you.

“Whatever it is it can kill you and we have to stay together.

“All the outside stuff we can’t let it affect us.

“What matters is out there on the pitch because whatever happens out there will look after what’s happening outside anyway so we just have to stay together.”

Blues have triumphed just once all season and are seven points from safety with a vastly inferior goal difference to the teams around them.

But Hobson is not looking too far ahead and was buoyed by Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Stevenage as the Shrimpers secured just their second clean sheet of the season.

“It was a scrappy game for both teams but we battled well to stay in the game and had a few chances at the end too,” said the 22-year-old.

“We couldn’t quite get the goal but we’ll take the clean sheet away from home and go into the next game now.

“It was a good clean sheet but it’s just about finding that consistency now but we’re getting there.”

The Shrimpers will now be looking to build on the draw against Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall this weekend.

And Hobson insists Mark Molesley’s side remain closely knit despite their struggles.

“We’re a team and we’re together,” said Hobson.

“Sometimes with teams at the bottom you see them arguing and bickering but we’re together and it’s only a matter of time really.

“I hate losing but we just have to try and stay positive.”

The Shrimpers could also have their fans back inside Roots Hall on Saturday and Hobson feels that will help the team.

“It would be a massive boost for us,” said Hobson.

“We need the support and it will do us good.”

“Stay with us, we’re coming.

“I understand their pain because we’re feeling it too.

“It’s not like we’re going happy.

“But stay with us and support the team.

“No matter what we will fight for you.”

Scunthorpe, who host Colchester United on Tuesday night, are currently 16th in the League Two standings and have been beaten in just one of their last six outings.
