JAMES Olayinka is desperate for his winning goal against Scunthorpe to signal a change in fortunes for Southend United.

The on loan Arsenal midfielder bagged the only goal of the game 10 minutes from time at Roots Hall on Saturday.

And Olayinka wants Blues to build on their first home win of the season as they bid to work their way off the bottom of the League Two table.

"We need to build on good performances," said the 20-year-old.

"After the win at Walsall we went on a little bit of a slump so hopefully we can build on this win now because it’s a busy period for us.

"We need to get more points and then see where we are come January."

Saturday's victory saw the Shrimpers close the gap to those above them to four points.

And Olayinka was delighted to hit the back of the net for the first time ever in the Football League.

"When I came here I knew I needed to help the team with goals," said Olayinka.

"We’ve been struggling throughout the season really and hopefully this can be the turning point now.

"All of the forward players have been working hard in training on our finishing and hopefully if we keep the ball out at the other end we can start to get some more wins."

Olayinka's strike was greeted by a huge roar from the returning Roots Hall faithful.

And the youngster was thrilled to finally have Blues' fans back in the ground "It felt great," said Olayinka.

"It’s been a long time since anyone associated with the club has been able to come to the games and that’s what gave us a real lift.

"We’ve had a few bad results in a row where we probably deserved more but the difference was those fans. "It makes a big difference and the atmosphere is completely different."

And that atmosphere improved even more late on with Olayinka firing home a right wing cross from Jason Demetriou.

"A couple of minutes before I had missed an opportunity to get in around the back post," said the midfielder.

"On this one I hung out and waited. I didn’t actually call for it but Emile (Acquah) left it and I just tried to keep it down and hit the target.

"It was great to see it go in."
