SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley feels Greg Halford's versatility will prove key for the Shrimpers.

The 36-year-old lined up as a striker after coming off the bench for his Blues debut during the 3-1 win against Grimsby Town.

And Molesley feels Halford - who scored the Shrimpers' third goal in the victory - can perform well over the pitch.

"The beauty of Greg's signing is that he’s got a wealth of experience and he can play in virtually any position too," said Molesley.

"He certainly makes us a lot stronger and he gave us a different element up there when he come on.

"He asked the question the header and got it on target.

"Before we haven’t been putting in that kind of delivery or getting in the right place."
