TIMOTHEE Dieng was delighted to secure the county’s bragging rights for Southend United on Saturday.

The Frenchman scored the Shrimpers’ second goal in a 2-0 victory against local rivals Colchester United at Roots Hall.

And Dieng was thrilled to pick up an important three points which also saw Blues work their way off the foot of the League Two table.

“It was derby day and we showed we are the best team in Essex,” said the 28-year-old.

“It’s been a good day and it’s a good Christmas present too.

“We’ve been working hard to get off the bottom of the League but we need to keep going and keep winning.”

The Shrimpers, who have now not been beaten in five games, started brightly against Colchester with Simeon Akinola heading home a free-kick from Sam Hart after just 10 minutes.

Dieng doubled the home-side’s lead with a fine finish following a great run forward from Kyle Taylor.

And he was happy to net his first goal since scoring at Bolton Wanderers back in December 2019.

“To be fair I have been playing at the back a lot but it was a good feeling to score and to help the team to win,” said Dieng.

“It was a great start but we needed to start on the front foot like we did.

“Coming in at half-time was a good thing but we had to keep it going in the second half.”

The Shrimpers remained solid to make sure of their third home win in succession.

But Dieng remains hungry for more of the same.

“Like the gaffer has said we’ve not done anything yet,” said Dieng.

“We need to keep the momentum going and keep winning.

“Tuesday is another derby against Leyton Orient and we need to keep the same mindset to go and win the game.”

Dieng is also determined to help make that happen.

And, after moving back into midfield to take on Colchester, he does not mind where he will be asked to play.

“It’s a different mindset in midfield but I give it everything in defence or midfield,” said Dieng.

“I don’t mind where I am I just want to play and help the team.

“The mindset now is good and so is the mood.”
