SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley is still in talks with Arsenal as he bids to extend James Olayinka's loan spell with Blues.

The midfielder has scored three goals in 15 games since signing for the Shrimpers in October.

And Molesley would love the 20-year-old to remain at Roots Hall beyond the end of the month.

"We’ve touched base with Arsenal again this week," said Molesley.

"James has had a bit of a frustrating time lately where we’ve had to manage his workload because of his groins and he’s had an injection.

"But he’s another one we’ve done a lot of work with and would like to keep around."

Olayinka has started Blues' last two matches after missing the 2-0 win against Colchester United on Boxing Day with a groin problem.

And Molesley is keen to see more from the 20-year-old.

"He has quality and we’d like to see that on a consistent basis with his fitness coming back," said the Blues boss.

"We will have to wait and see on that one but he’s certainly an exciting prospect.

"I’d like to think he’s enjoyed his time here albeit it’s been frustrating at times because of his injury.

"We will revisit that one at the end of next week and see what works best for both parties.
