SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley joked he would have shut his curtains had the Shrimpers’ 0-0 draw at Grimsby Town taken place in his back garden.

The two bottom teams in League Two played out a rather drab encounter in difficult conditions.

But Molesley still felt Blues did all they could to pick up the three points.

“It was one of those games,” said Molesley.

“We did everything we could to win the game, we asked them some questions and their keeper made a couple of good saves at the end.

“But if that was in your back garden you would probably have shut the curtains.

“The elements played their part and fair play to Grimsby for getting the game on.

“We were travelling up fearing another postponement like Newport but their groundstaff has done really well to get the game on.”

However, the pitch was still tough to play on and both sides struggled to carve out chances.

“Half the pitch played better but it was very boggy on the other side,” said Molesley.

“There’s a lot on the line for both teams too in tricky conditions and you can forgive the players for not taking too many risks.

“It was always going to be a battle out there but we more than matched them.

“We showed we were hard to beat but we would have liked to have created more but you can’t fault the attitude and the fight.”
