GREG Halford feels his best is yet to come at Southend United.

The 36-year-old has signed a new contract to keep him with the Shrimpers until the end of the season.

And Halford, who will be back in the squad for Tuesday night's League Two clash with Cambridge United, is thrilled to be remaining at Roots Hall.

“I’m delighted to be staying and to know where I’m going to be playing my football for the next four months,” said Halford.

“Hopefully I’ll get many more games under my belt and help the team move up the table.

“The Barrow game was my first start in over two years so I’m probably ahead of schedule in terms of starting games.

“But in terms of performances I know there is still a lot more to come from me.”

Halford made five appearances during his initial month long deal with the Shrimpers and has already experienced extreme highs and lows.

The versatile Halford scored on his debut against Grimsby Town and was sent off in his last appearance against Barrow.

But Halford is happy with how things have been going.

“I’m pleased with how it’s gone so far,” said Halford.

“I’ve wanted to play more minutes but obviously being out the length of time that I have been, the games that I’ve had I’ve done OK in.

“It’s still all about building my fitness.”

Halford had not played a competitive fixture since May 2019 before joining Blues and remains grateful to boss Mark Molesley.

“I’m really pleased and thankful to the manager and coaching staff for getting me up to speed and putting the faith into me.

“Hopefully I can repay that over the next four or five months.”

And Molesley is also thrilled to be keeping Halford at the club.

“The situation we’re in, vast experience is always something you want and he can play in a number of positions too,” said Molesley.
