JAY Simpson is still training at Southend United.

The experienced striker, who has been without a club this season, is bidding to earn a deal with Blues.

But, with the EFL website confirming the Shrimpers have reached their full quota of 22 senior players, boss Mark Molesley is looking into ways a deal could happen.

"I’m still catching up with the rules and we’re looking at it," said Molesley.

"Jay has been in and around the squad and he’s had a very good career.

"We’re the highest on numbers we’ve had at the moment and there might be an opportunity if we need to it due to players who have long term injuries coming out of your squad.

"We’ve got a couple of lads who are unfortunately out for the season and there is potential we might be able to register someone else if needed."

The 32-year-old Simpson has 82 career goals to his name but Molesley is not short of options in a large squad.

"At the moment we have a lot of bodies and good players around us," said Molesley.

"We’re in a good place but Jay is a player of great calibre.

"We’ve seen him up close in training and he’s a great player, there’s no doubting that.

"If it works for both parties maybe we’ll have a look at it but at the moment we’re fully focused on the lads who will be playing tomorrow.
