SOUTHEND United defender Shaun Hobson insists he gets more pleasure stopping goals than scoring them.

The centre-back volleyed home an impressive effort in Blues’ 3-1 win at Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday night.

But Hobson would prefer to be excelling at the other end of the pitch.

“I don’t know what it is when I score goals but I would rather a goal-line clearance if I’m honest,” said Hobson, who barely celebrated his fine strike.

“I would get more out of that than scoring a goal.

“Obviously the biggest thing is getting the win but it was disappointing we didn’t get a clean sheet.

“We conceded late on but it was an excellent performance from us.”

Hobson’s goal was his first ever effort in the Football League.

But he score twice while on loan at Weymouth last season where he was also playing for Blues boss Mark Molesley.

“I scored a couple of good goals at Weymouth as well but this one is up there with the best I’ve got,” said Hobson.

“As soon as I hit it I knew it was going in, if it was on target.

“I hit it sweetly and it just went in.”

But Hobson’s goal was not the only impressive effort from the Shrimpers as Timothee Dieng also curled home a fine shot and Nathan Ferguson scored with a stupendous strike from long range which Hobson feels will not be bettered this season.

“Every single goal was a great finish and Nathan’s hands down wins goal of the season,” said Hobson.

“I can’t see a goal being better than that in League Two.”

Blues’ win moved them out of the bottom two and came 24 hours after relegation rivals Grimsby Town and Barrow had both triumphed.

But Hobson will not be paying too much attention to other teams.

“We just focus on us,” said the defender.

“We don’t think about the other results.

“It’s all about us and we focus on that.

“We always have belief and the gaffer pushes the mentality every day.

“Football is about mentality and turning up every single day.”

And the Shrimpers will now be looking to pick up more points this weekend when promotion chasing Salford City head to Roots Hall.

“It’s another big team but we’ve done well against the big teams lately,” added Hobson.
