SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley thought using Greg Halford as a lone striker worked well against Morecambe.

Halford was recalled against the Shrimps for his first start since the beginning of the March.

And, with Timothee Dieng featuring just behind the 36-year-old in attack, Molesley felt the new look strike-force worked well.

"It worked really well," said Molesley.

"We had the ascendancy early on and got the goal.

"Greg and Tim linked up well and caused them problems.

"Having his experience on the pitch was good too.

"I’m not making excuses but we’re missing a lot of players again, including experienced ones.

"Having Greg Halford up there helps and he did a good job up there.

"Tim scored and we made chances.

"Both of them who started up front played their part in both boxes."
