STAN Collymore gave Southend United supporters ‘their best 90 minutes of the season’ tonight as the former Shrimpers striker spoke of his desire to rescue the club from the football doldrums.

Blues are on the brink of falling out of the Football League after enduring another torrid season.

But Collymore, who is due to hold talks with chairman Ron Martin on Friday, is desperate to do all he can to help.

And the Save Our Southend chairman Scott Peters was among those to be impressed by how well Collymore spoke this evening.

“It was really refreshing and humbling to hear someone like Stan Collymore speak about the club the way he does,” said Peters.

“He’s got passion for the club and the fans as well.

“He genuinely cares and it was great. It was the best 90 minutes of the season I think and we really hope something materialises from it.

“We remain cautious but we will support Stan and his efforts in any way we can.”

Collymore outlined how he would like to help the club in a Zoom meeting which also included popular former Blues boss Steve Tilson.

And co-editor of the All At Sea fanzine Jamie Forsyth also enjoyed speaking with the former England international.

“It was a really encouraging meeting,” said Forsyth.

“Stan clearly knows his stuff and listened carefully to all the fans in the room.

“It will be interesting to see what happens next. Something urgently needs to change to bring stability and pride back to the club and hopefully Stan’s involvement can be the catalyst.”

And lifelong supporter James Schooley was also delighted to spend time speaking with Collymore.

“Stan went above and beyond to spend over an hour and a half with us, and I'm really grateful,” said Schooley.

“It will be interesting to see what comes out of his meeting with Ron Martin.

“Whether he ends up pulling together a group of investors to offer him a route out of the football side of the club or simply offers help and contacts to get the club moving forward, things need to change.

“Hopefully this is the beginning.”
