SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin is keen for Phil Brown to stay in charge of the Shrimpers.

Brown returned to Roots Hall for the final six games of the season.

And Martin would like the 61-year-old to remain as Blues boss.

"I very much hope Phil will stay," said Martin.

"Him and I have spoken, we both view things positively and he’s challenged by it, as am I.

"I think Phil and I will come to terms, I’ve heard no negatives from Phil and he knew what he was taking on."

Brown, who previously spent five years in charge of the Shrimpers, has taken eight points from five games since coming back to the club.

And, despite that not being enough to avoid relegation, Martin has noticed a big difference with brown in charge.

"We were never in control of our own destiny when Phil came here and the players have responded to him," said Martin.

"Of we’ve had our moments, inevitably because I sacked him.

"But in a funny sort of way that bonds people.

"When you’ve had a bit of a falling out you get to know each other better.

"We worked together for nearly five years and I do hope we agree terms.

"He knows what we’re attempting to do."

Blues complete their season against Newport County at Roots Hall on Saturday.
