SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin has confirmed Phil Brown will be remaining as Blues boss.

Brown – who previously spent five years in charge of the Shrimpers – returned to Roots Hall for the final six games of the season.

And Martin told TalkSPORT the 61-year-old will be staying put as Blues bid to bounce back from two successive relegations.

“We will announce this morning that Phil Brown has signed a long term contract so I’m already rebuilding that position and I’m challenged by what we now need to do,” said Martin.

“I’m not a quitter.

“I’m absolutely gutted like all the supporters that we’ve been relegated but now the challenge is to get back as quickly as possible.”

The Shrimpers will be lining up in the National League next season.

And Martin still believes the future is bright for the football club.

“I can understand why fans have been concerned in the past but not for the future.

“The future off the pitch is excellent and there’s enormous support from the council.

“The relocation plans will also enable us to build the team on the pitch.”

However, Blues have struggled badly in recent seasons and close to 300 fans opted to protest before the final game of the season against Newport County on Saturday.

But, while understanding the frustration of the fans, Martin has vowed to put things right.

“It’s understandable and they need someone to vent their frustration at,” said Martin.

“But they can’t say I’m not supportive of the football club.

“I go to every home and away game and I have done for 23 years.

“I wake up every day thinking about how I can improve the club too.

“We are distraught as to where we are but it won’t stop us fighting to get back to where we need to be.

“The football club is in good hands.

“Just stand back, let me get on with my job and we will create success for Southend again.
