WICKFORD beat Gidea Park & Romford by four wickets to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Wickford top the Division Two table after winning their first three games of the season.

And skipper Charlie Phillippe heaped praise on his team following Saturday’s success.

“It was a great team performance,” said Phillippe.

“We bowled and fielded really well and did an excellent job in chasing down a good total in tricky conditions.”

But Phillippe is not getting carried away by the good start.

“We’ve had a great start to the season but it’s only a start,” said Phillippe.

“There’s a long way to go so we need to make sure we build on this for the remainder of the season.”

Gidea Park were bowled out for 163 with Chris Whitworth taking 4/17 and Connor Etchells 3/33 before Wickford reached a revised target on 159 for the loss of six wickets.

Chris Westwood top scored with 51 while Dean Etchells scored a crucial 36 not out.

Elsewhere in Division Two, Westcliff beat Leigh on Sea by 23 runs.

Westcliff batted first and were bowled out for 194.

Joe Robbins top scored with 65 while Matt Wagstaff took 3/49 for Leigh.

But, in reply, Leigh made 171/9 with Oliver Wagstaff the highest scoring with 39 before he was run out.

Adil Ali took 3/30 for Westcliff who now sit third in the table, one place and one point behind Leigh.

Benfleet sit fourth after beating Orsett & Thurrock by 73 runs.

Benfleet made 163 in their innings with Joe McIver scoring 42 and Gavin Blowes 40 before Orsett were bowled out for just 90.

Stephen Reeve took 4/17 and Taylor Casson 4/22.

However, Southend & EMT were beaten by five wickets against Oakfield Parkonians.

In Division One, Old Southendian & Southchurch suffered an eight run defeat to Shenfield and there was also disappointment for Hadleigh & Thundersley in the Premier Division after they were beaten by 20 runs against Belhus.

Belhus made 193/7 in their innings with Haider Ali Syed Zaidi taking 4/36 before they were dismissed for 173 in reply.
