SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown enjoyed mingling with supporters at Meet the Blues Day and now wants those fans to top their own table this season.

The Shrimpers start their National League campaign with a trip to King’s Lynn this weekend.

And Brown is keen to repay the fans he enjoyed meeting at the club’s annual family fun day.

“It’s always a great day and I think the record we had here was over 3,000 one year,” said Brown.

“It’s been a good turn out again but I’ve been looking at all the non-league crowds and I’m hoping our crowds will be the biggest in the division.

“We got challenges with finances, this that and the other and back to back relegations but we have to smash that malaise that hangs over the club by winning the first game at King’s Lynn then see how many we can get in against Stockport.

“We want to get the three points and show everyone the football we can play.”

The vast majority of National League matches were played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic last season but Notts County topped the attendance charts for the 2019/20 season, averaging 5,210 at Meadow Lane.

The Shrimpers have now sold more than 3,000 season cards for the forthcoming campaign.
