AFTER a one-year gap, due to the coronavirus outbreak in 2020, Southend Wheelers were back promoting another successful cycling event in their race calendar, the Andrews Trophy road race.

With national escort out riders leading the way, 50 competitors took to the roads around East Hanningfield.

The 128km (80 miles), 14-lap event saw riders getting off to a quick pace with several attacks in the first few laps, but it was not until an hour into the event that two breaks formed, both consisting of five riders.

A few laps later one break remained holding off all attempts to catch them from the main bunch by retaining an average speed above 27mph.

By the final lap the breakaway group had reduced to two riders for the final uphill sprint along Pan Lane in to East Hanningfield with Ken Buckley, Nuun Sigma Sport London RT taking the win.

He narrowly beat Jake Crossley, Lea Valley Youth CC with Paul Hart, HPC, moving free from the bunch on the last lap to take third.
