SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is still looking to strengthen his squad.

The Blues boss has made 10 signings since the end of the last season.

But Brown remains keen to add even more quality.

“I’m always on the look out for better players and we don’t have transfer windows at this level either which is another quirky side to the league,” said Brown.

“I’ll always be on the look out but on Tuesday I looked at the session here and went to the under 23s at Maidstone and the standard was different class.

“So whenever you bring a player in he’s got to add to that quality and make the team better.

“That’s the stage we are at now.”

However, there are actual areas Brown remains keen to strengthen.

“We still don’t really have a left sided centre-back,” said Brown.

“Ralphy (Nathan Ralph) is fitting in there because of his ability.

“He shouldn’t be at this level if you ask me.

“He should be two divisions higher but I’m delighted he’s here.

“I’d look for a left-sided centre-back and maybe another striker but all managers will always be saying that.”

The Shrimpers started the National League season with a 1-0 win at King’s Lynn.

And Brown is now preparing for the first home game of the campaign, against Stockport County this weekend.

“It’s a different kind of challenge,” said Brown.

“They’re a former EFL team like ourselves and they’ve certainly invested that’s for sure.”
