SOUTHEND Saxons’ co-captain Matt Wagstaff insists there is a ‘great buzz’ at Warners Bridge – despite starting the season with back to back defeats.

Southend have been seen off by Colchester and Thurrock in their opening two matches of the London One North campaign.

But Wagstaff feels there has still been plenty to be positive about.

“There are some huge positives to take,” said Wagstaff.

“We are creating plenty of scoring opportunities and we have new players that are making huge impacts.

“The mindset of the squad is very positive too.

“We understand this season is a challenge with new laws, returning to the game, and the tough fixture list.

“However, there is a great buzz and we are excited to keep improving.”

Southend have taken just one point from their opening two games.

And Wagstaff knows it will take time for Saxons to get back to their best.

“The first two games have been frustrating as we have had opportunities to win both games,” said Wagstaff.

“But 18 months away from the game can sometimes impact performances especially at match intensity.”

Next up for Southend is a home clash against Brentwood and Wagstaff is expecting another stern test.

“Brentwood are a strong outfit,” said Wagstaff.

“We don’t expect anything less than a fast and physical game so we are preparing for that.

“No fixture is easy in the calendar, so we must prepare and refine our skills to ensure we can put a performance in against any opposition.

“But it will be a great afternoon on Saturday and I hope we can top it off with a win.”

Brentwood have taken six points from their first two games of the season.
