JASON Demetriou is looking forward to his first game as Southend United’s interim head coach but will fine anyone calling him ‘gaffer’!

Demetriou will take charge of the Shrimpers for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Chertsey Town at Roots Hall.

But the 33-year-old will not be letting the position go to his head!

“I’m not making anyone call me gaffer, that’s a fine,” said Demetriou.

“It’s JD or Jason or whatever you want to call me!

“We try to have a bit of banter with it but I, along with Josh (Coulson) who is helping me out, we’ve got to make the final decision.

“There has to be a cutting edge but it’s only for a week.

“The boys have reacted well and we’re really looking forward to tomorrow now.

“There are smiles back on the faces and we want a win.”

Demetriou took training again today and is still mulling over his starting line-up for the fourth qualifying round clash.

“I’ve stayed in the changing room with the boys and it will be a hard decision to pick the team,” said the defender.

“I’m mates with them and we all get on really well.

“I knew this was the job and it was going to be the difficult thing but it’s something I want to go to in the future so it’s nice to have a little taste.

“We need a good positive performance with smiles back on people’s faces.”
