NATHAN Ralph believes Jason Demetriou has helped bring positivity back to Southend United.

Demetriou will take charge of the Shrimpers for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Chertsey Town following the departure of Phil Brown.

And Ralph feels Demetriou has already made a difference.

“It’s been positive,” said Ralph.

“Jason has taken charge for the moment and he’s definitely made sure there’s positivity back in the group.

“We’re getting set on the things we need to do. Hopefully we can go on a cup run and games like Saturday can really kick start the season.”

And Ralph is certain Demetriou will also have the backing of Blues’ squad.

“Jason is the type of player a lot of us look up to,” said Ralph.

“He’s that leader in the group so it felt right and it’s felt good to be a part of it this week.

“It’s been enjoyable.”

The Shrimpers will be bidding to get back on track after losing five of their last six games.

And Ralph is keen to help make that happen, wherever he is selected at the back.

“It’s all experience and I don’t mind where I play,” said Ralph who has played at centre-back and left-back this season.

“Being injured as long as I have you’re happy to be on the pitch.

“But I’m gaining more knowledge and a better understanding.”

Ralph joined Blues in the summer of 2019 but made just a total of 28 appearances in his first two seasons after suffering serious shoulder and knee injuries.

And the 28-year-old is enjoying finally being back in action.

“It’s never nice being stuck in the gym,” said Ralph.

“I’m happy to be out there and I’m just glad to be part of the group and having matchdays again.

“When you’re out for so long you kind of forget what it’s like.”

However, Ralph has endured one small break in his season so far after picking up five yellow cards in his first seven games.

That resulted in a one match ban but Ralph is now keen to avoid further suspensions.

“I’ve never had five bookings in a season so I don’t know where that’s come from,” said Ralph.

“I was getting booked for breaking up scuffles and things like that but maybe a couple of things at the start were down to being a bit off the pace after so long out.

“But hopefully it’s a one off and I don’t get another five now.”
