SOUTHEND United’s interim coach Jason Demetriou was proud of his players following this afternoon’s 4-1 win against Chertsey Town.

Blues went behind early on in the fourth qualifying round clash at Roots Hall.

But Demetriou always felt the Shrimpers would fight back to triumph.

“After the first five minutes I think we all thought ‘oh no’ but I did always have confidence in the boys,” said Demetriou.

“We’ve had a great week and we know we’ve got a good group here, it’s just about confidence.

“They really stuck to the task and I was really impressed with the performance today.

“I’m proud of the boys and I’m looking forward to being back with them next week.”

And Demetriou would love to end to eventually end up in management on a full-time basis.

“I enjoyed it in the end and in the future it’s something I’ll want to do hopefully,” said Demetriou.

“It’s a whole new emotion and you can’t do it yourself.

“You have to rely on other people but the boys were great and I look forward to doing it again in the future, but not right now.”
