SOUTHEND United’s new first team coach Mark Bentley has urged Canvey Island to ‘finish what we started’ following his departure from Park Lane.

Bentley stepped down as manager of the Isthmian North leaders to become part of Blues’ new look coaching team.

But, writing on Twitter, Bentley was keen to wish Canvey well.

He posted: “I sincerely wish everyone associated with the club all the greatest of success.

“I leave with the club in a fantastic position with a squad that I believe is the best in the league. A special group of players.

“What is even more special is the atmosphere that has been created since our great FA Cup run last year, attendances growing week by week and the solid connection between players and fans.

“Too many thank yous, but for the chairman for believing in me when appointing me and supporting every decision, the directors, every player and of course the fans (ultras).

“Finally the support from the management team Sammy, Stacey and Alex but more importantly Brad who has been with me through all the highs and low.

“I leave in good hands, now go finish what we started.”
