SOUTHEND United’s new head coach Kevin Maher will evaluate the current squad before contemplating new signings.

Maher will begin his spell in charge of Blues with a trip to Dagenham & Redbridge this weekend.

But the 44-year-old is keen to make his own mind up on the players before deciding if reinforcements are required .

“It's only fair to look at what’s in the building first,” said Maher.

“Behind the scenes we’ll be looking at players and if it’s right then we’ll look to bring people in.

“But first and foremost let’s get behind the players we already have and give them every chance to succeed.”

However, Maher is facing a shortage of defenders for his first game in charge which will also see more than 1,000 Shrimpers supporters heading to Victoria Road.

“It’s difficult at the minute,” said Maher.

“There are still one or two injury concerns but we will give them every chance before deciding the best way to go.

“Hopefully one or two will be back but whatever team we put out is going to have a brilliant crowd behind them.”

Goalkeeper Steve Arnold, full-backs Jason Demetriou and Charlie Sayers and centre-backs John White, Josh Coulson and Shaun Hobson all missed Saturday’s FA Cup win against Chertsey Town due to injuries.

Midfielder Abu Ogogo also missed out with a broken foot while left-back Tom Clifford has yet to feature this season due to an ankle injury.

On loan Sunderland striker Benji Kimpioka is available again after not being given permission by his parent club to feature in the FA Cip.
