SOUTHEND United skipper John White felt there were ‘good bits’ to take from Blues’ 3-0 defeat at Dagenham.

The Shrimpers conceded three times in quick succession at the start of the second half to lose in Kevin Maher’s first game in charge.

But, despite the result, White felt there signs of promise.

“There were plenty of good bits to take out if it,” said the defender.

“In the first half we were very solid at the back throughout the team with our shape when they had the ball.

“But I think we were in a bit of a rush once we won it back to still be in that fight mode.

“We weren’t good enough with the ball with those first couple of passes.

“If we got those right I think we would’ve created a few more chances and we would’ve been able to cut through them more than we did.”

Blues failed to register a single shot on target at Victoria Road.

But Dagenham had no such difficulties as they secured victory with three goals in the space of just six minutes.

“We were trying to come here with a bit of a resolve and a bit of grit but ultimately the goals that came thick and fast, in that however many minutes, knocked the stuffing out of us,” said White.

“Yes the score-line looks bad but there were positives to take out of it.

“But it’s a very, very early stage so there is plenty more to come.”

And White feels the change in management can galvanise the group.

“The manager we’ve got in wants us to do well, he wants us to go and show what we can do because he believes in us along with his coaching staff,” said the 35-year-old.

“It will take time to get going and to get their ideas across to us on exactly on how they want us to play.

“That takes time but as long as we’re going out there doing our best, trying to enjoy it and doing our best to get those points on board we’re going to do alright.”
