SOUTHEND Saxons suffered a 33-20 defeat to high-flying Shelford at Warners Bridge.

The setback kept Southend sixth in the London One North standings.

But Saxons’ director of rugby Josh Ward was keen to remain upbeat.

“We were very good in the first 20 minutes,” said Ward.

“We caused them some serious problems and Jake (Rawinsky) on the wing was outstanding.

“The start was very pleasing but in the second quarter they got more ball in hand for themselves and we had a few moments where we lapsed a little bit.

“We were well in the contest at half-time but we know we’ve got plenty to work on.

“I don’t feel like we got the rub of the green but there are plenty of positives to take.”

Tom Ramsey scored a try for Southend against second placed Shelford while the Saxons were also awarded a penalty try.
