JASON Demetriou finished Southend United’s 4-1 defeat at Notts County in goal after the Shrimpers opted against naming a replacement shot-stopper on the bench.

Demetriou played the final the final 13 minutes between the sticks after Steve Arnold was forced off with concussion.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher felt the situation summed up Blues’ fortunes.

“A lot of clubs go without goalkeepers on the bench at this level and it obviously gives you more outfield options but Steve had to come off and that’s the way it’s going for us right now,” said Maher.

“Jason went in goal and we had spoken about our options but it was dependant on who was on the pitch.”
