MATT Dennis made the most of a rare opportunity to impress during Southend United’s 2-1 win against Dorking Wanderers.

Dennis had played just eight minutes in Kevin Maher’s first nine matches in charge.

But the on loan Norwich City youngster played the final 24 minutes in place of Rhys Murphy against Dorking.

And Blues boss Maher was pleased to see the 19-year-old pop up to score a brilliant winning goal as he curled an impressive 25 yard shot into the top right hand corner of the net.

“It was brilliant,” said Maher.

“Murph was disappointed to come off but we needed some fresh legs and pace up there.

“Matty hasn’t always been given a chance to be fair so I’m delighted for him to get the winner.”

Dennis has now made eight appearances for Blues this season, eight of which have come from the bench.
