JAMES Blanchfield insists Concord Rangers should be setting their sights on the National League South play-offs this season.

The attacking midfielder was among the goalscorers as the Beach Boys triumphed 3-1 at Billericay Town on Boxing Day.

And Blanchfield is now determined to build on the victory, starting with Tuesday afternoon’s clash against Chelmsford City at the Aspect Arena.

“As a team we are aiming to get in the play-offs,” said Blanchfield.

“I think we all know the ability we all have and the team have and I think it’s achievable.

“Things are looking good and we have the team spirit to achieve this.

“Chelmsford will be another tough game but we’re looking forward to it, especially after the win at Billericay.”

Bottom of the table Billericay opened the scoring after just six minutes at New Lodge with Michael Chambers on target.

However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men four minutes before the break when Kweku Lucan was red carded.

Concord equalised three minutes into the second half with Blanchfield on target before Joe Payne and Ben Allen also hit the back of the net for the Beach Boys.

And Blanchfield remains delighted with the victory.

“It was a tough game and we didn’t start as well as we hoped,” said Blanchfield.

“I still felt we were in the game and dominating really but we conceded a sloppy goal.

“Once we rode that wave a little bit we started to dominate the game and create a lot of chances.”

Concord were also able to make the most of their opportunities with Blanchfield among those on target.

“I was over the moon to score my first goal of the season, especially as we went on to get a deserved three points,” said Blanchfield.

“I love playing on Boxing Day and I always think any game on that day is special so I really enjoyed it.”

Concord - who have had Chris Search in charge since the start of the campaign- now sit 11th in the standings and Blanchfield has been pleased with the season so far.

“Obviously there were some changes at the start of the season with the manager etc but things have been really good,” said Blanchfield.

“We have a great bunch of lads and a great management team too.

“We have loads to work on towards our goals for the season and I’m sure we will achieve them all.”

However, defeat piled more misery onto Billericay whose boss Jody Brown felt the red card just before the break was the turning point of the contest.

“I felt we were in control of the game,” said Brown.

“I might be wrong, I don’t have a photographic memory, but I don’t recall them having a chance before we went down to 10 men.

“Maybe there were a couple of long range efforts but the red card is a big turning point.

“It’s hard from where I am to see if it was a red card or not but there was enough there for the referee not to give a red card.

“Until I see it back I won’t be able to give a strong opinion but it’s not an excuse.

“I still felt confident and felt we could create chances, which we did.

“But I expect us to defend better than that.

“We do a lot of work on Thursday nights defending against overloads, eight v sixes, that kind of thing, so it’s not a situation we’re unaccustomed to.

“I’m disappointed we conceded the goals but of course it’s hard going down to 10 men having been largely in control of the game up until that point.”

Billericay head to second placed Ebbsfleet United on Tuesday.
