SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is pleased to see Matt Dennis making the most of his chance with the Shrimpers.

Dennis played just eight minutes in Maher’s first nine games in charge but the on loan Norwich City youngster has now netted in his last three outings.

And Maher is delighted Dennis is now showing what he is capable of.

“When we came in, obviously Matt’s on loan, and I wanted to look at our own players,” explained Maher.

“We’re only allowed five subs as well and I’d like to put more on really.

“But he came on against Dorking, he got his chance and he’s taken it. “He’s in good form now and he took his goal really well today too.”

Dennis bagged the only goal of the game as Blues triumphed 1-0 at relegation rivals Weymouth.

But the striker was later forced off with cramp.

“When you come out of 23s football and into men’s football it’s tough,” said Maher.

“The pitches are heavy at this time of year and you’re going game to game.

“It can be tough and you have to grind it out at times but he will get fitter and stronger.

“I’m delighted with him but I’m delighted with everyone.”

Dennis was joined in attack against Weymouth by both Sam Dalby and Rhys Murphy.

And Maher felt the system worked well.

“We played something similar at Bromley with Zak (Brunt) in an area we thought he could get a lot of the ball,” said Maher.

“With Zak going back it was slightly different but out of possession I wanted to get pressure on them up top.

“I thought the three of them would cause problems and I want more attacking play.

“You need a good base to play from as well but I thought it worked well.”
