SOUTHEND United’s match at Dagenham & Redbridge was halted for close to four minutes in the second half due to crowd trouble.
In the aftermath of Dagenham’s second goal, a fan situated among Southend’s support from behind the goal ran to the left hand side of the pitch before confronting the home-side’s supporters.
Items were thrown by both sets of fans and Blues boss Kevin Maher explained at the final whistle why referee Sam Purkiss had been reluctant to restart the game straight away.
“He was worried about the linesman going near it,” said Maher.
A section of Southend’s support had started the game far closer to Dagenham’s fans before being moved behind the goal.
Dagenham won the FA Trophy fourth round clash 2-0.
