BILLERICAY Town achieved lift-off from the foot of the National League South table on Saturday, after beating high-flyers Oxford City 2-1.

Shaq Coulthirst and Femi Akinwande both found the target in the first half and, despite Canice Carroll’s strike for City, the fourth placed side couldn’t find a leveller in the second half.

Jody Brown’s side are now undefeated in their last four matches, and has risen above Braintree Town in the standings.

However, the Iron have three games in hand on Billericay.

Elsewhere, in the Isthmian Premier, Bowers & Pitsea suffered their fifth consecutive defeat as Carshalton Athletic clinched 1-0 victory at the Len Salmon Stadium.

Tommy Bradford scored the game’s only goal 20 minutes from time.

Bowers remain 18th.

In the Isthmian North, Canvey Island continued in their hunt for top spot with 6-2 victory against Hullbridge Sports.

Evans Kouassi and Matthew Price were at the double for the Gulls, while Elliott Ronto and Callum Fitzer also found the target.

Brad Wellmen’s side remain third, but sit just a point below leaders Aveley.

Hashtag United suffered a 1-0 defeat to the in-form Felixstowe and Walton United, hurting the Tags’ play-off aspirations.

Jay Devereux’s side have consequently fallen to eighth.

Basildon United also fell to defeat, a 2-0 setback against Dereham Town.

It is the Bees’ second consecutive 2-0 loss.

To round up the weekend’s action, Great Wakering Rovers suffered late heartbreak as they fell to 1-0 defeat against Brentwood Town courtesy of a 90th minute winner.

Rovers looked to be set to take a share of the spoils until Daniel Ogunleye struck the late blow.

They remain slumped in 17th.
