WILL Atkinson has signed a new contract at Southend United, keeping him at the club until the end of the season.

The midfielder has started the last four league matches for the Shrimpers.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher is pleased the 33-year-old will be remaining at Roots Hall.

“Will’s a great character and a great person,” said Maher.

“His work ethic is good around the place and when he goes onto the pitch you know what you’re going to get.

“Working hard is a talent and Will has got that in abundance.”

Atkinson made 173 appearances for Blues during his first spell at the club, which ended in 2017 before returning on a short-term basis at the start of the season.

And Maher has enjoyed working with the midfielder.

“He’s a breath of fresh air and just talks about playing all the time,” said the Blues boss.

“I’m delighted to have him on board and he’s been really important for us.

“Age is just a number when you’re as fit as Will is.

“He’s non-stop and him and Nealy (Harrison Neal) have done ever so well in midfield so we’re looking for more of the same.”

Atkinson has made 15 appearances for the Shrimpers this term and feels the club are starting to get back on track.

"It’s been a bit of a tough place to be at times this year, but I feel like it’s starting to turn now," said Atkinson.

“I want to be a part of it moving forward so I’m really pleased to be staying.

"I think it’s all coming together and hopefully we can keep moving forward."

Blues head to Aldershot tomorrow night on the back of three straight wins in the league.

But Atkinson still feels there is more to come from the Shrimpers.

" We want to be a lot higher up and, although it’s a lot better than we were doing, there’s still for improvement," said Atkinson.

“There’s no point in getting carried away or anything but I’m getting a run in the team so I’m getting fitter all the time.

"I’m looking forward to another game tomorrow and we’ll be looking to get another three points."
