SOUTHEND United midfielder Lewis Gard is keen to repay the faith being shown in him by boss Kevin Maher.

Gard has signed a new contract with the Shrimpers, keeping him at the club until the end of the season.

And the 22-year-old is keen to kick on and add to his appearances for the first team.

"The gaffer has been great for me and he’s put a bit of trust in me by giving me the contract so I owe him that back by going out and performing,” said Gard.

“I’ve been here since I was eight or nine so it’s great to extend my deal and now I want to work hard to get into the team.”

"It’s another six months where I really want to kick on and play as much as I can.”

Gard, who has played 15 times for Blues, has seen his progress hit by two serious knee injuries while at Roots Hall.

And he is now looking to make the most of his sustained level of fitness.

"This is my most injury-free season I’ve had since I’ve been a pro and of course I want to take advantage of that and play as many minutes as possible,” said Gard.

"The competition for places is mad because we’re winning games and all the boys are playing well.

“The standard in training has gone up so much by everyone and the ones who aren’t playing are ready for their chance when it comes.”
