RUGBY: Westcliff Lionesses saw off Southend Saints 45-7 in a keenly contested local derby.

Westcliff raced into an early lead, courtesy of two tries from Sophie Scanlon before winger Izzy Beadle also touched down to make it 15-0.

Saints fought hard to get back into the game and showed great strength around the ruck area but Westcliff soon replied with another try, this time from player of the match Alexis Roy, to make it 20-0 at half-time.

A well-worked try from Kay Edwards put Westcliff further in front at the start of the second half before the Saints came back hard with their defence against a determined Lionesses squad.

However, Charlotte Grant soon worked her way through to make it 30-0 before Scanlon completed her hat-trick with another effort.

Saints soon replied with Abby Jones flying down the wing to score her side’s first try of the game.

The conversion was added but Westcliff hit back to have the final say with Edwards scoring her second try of the game.
