SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher is keen to keep Matt Dennis at the club beyond the end of this season’s loan spell.

Dennis, who has scored eight goals in 28 games for the Shrimpers, has seen a year long clause in his contract activated by his parent club Norwich City.

But, speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Halifax Town at Roots Hall, Maher confirmed talks will continue surrounding the striker’s future.

“He’s Norwich’s player but we’ve been in talks with his representatives as well,” said Maher.

“If there’s something to be done we will try and do it but he’s Norwich’s player and it’s got to work for both parties.

“We talk to Matty all the time too and he often says how much he enjoys it here.

“We’ve done well for him and he’s done well for us.

“He’s still got a lot to learn, he knows that and he’s doing that here.”

Dennis set up a late goal for James Dunne in Monday’s 3-1 win at Barnet and will now be pushing for a place in the starting line-up on Saturday.

And Maher is looking for a strong performance against a Town side currently sitting third in the National League standings.

“It was important to get back on track like we did against Barnet and we have some a few games coming up in a short period now so we want to keep adding to what we’ve done,” said Maher.

“Halifax are a good side and they’ve been up there for the majority of the season.

“They’re in decent form and we know how tough it’s going to be.

“They’re a hard working side and a good side too so it’s a tough game, we know that.

“But off the back of a win we’ll look to give a good account of ourselves and I’m sure we’ll have another good crowd in.”
