SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher hailed the ‘effort and character’ of his side following Saturday’s 1-0 win against high flying Halifax Town.

An early effort from Kenny Clark saw the Shrimpers secure all three points at Roots Hall.

And Maher was pleased to make it back to back wins for Blues.

“To follow up the Barnet game with another win was important back in front of our fans and credit to the players for seeing it out,” said Maher.

“Halifax are third for a reason so we know what threat they can pose but we didn’t concede too many chances. “

And Blues were able to come out on top despite suffering three injuries during the game which saw Noor Husin, Kenny Clark and Jack Bridge having to go off.

“We lost Noor in the first half and Clarky at half-time which disrupts the flow and then Bridgey had to go off too but the players to show the effort and character they did was a real credit to them,” said Maher.

“It was really pleasing because we want to keep winning.”

The latest victory came following a well-worked corner which eventually resulted in Clark converting a low cross from Bridge.

And Maher was happy with the set pieces at both ends of the pitch.

“We work on set pieces all the time, defending and attacking,” said Maher.

“We stood up to the ones coming into our box and it was nice to score one at the other end too.”
