FORMER Southend United striker Neil Campbell has died at the age of 45.

Campbell scored three goals in 26 games for the Shrimpers between 1999 and 2000 and is best remembered at Roots Hall for scoring a brace in a 3-0 win at Leyton Orient.

The former forward once described current Blues boss Kevin Maher as the most naturally gifted player he ever lined up alongside.

And Maher - who played in the same Southend side as Campbell - has paid tribute to his old team-mate.

"It really shocked me when I heard," said Maher.

"It’s just so sad and 45 is no age at all.

"He was a great lad in the changing room.

"He got on with everyone and my thoughts are with his family right now."

Campbell also played for Doncaster, Scarborough and Barrow.

And several of his former clubs have also been paying tribute to their ex forward

A Barrow club statement said: “The club is extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of former player Neil Campbell at the age of just 45.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

A spokesman for Scarborough added: "Neil was a character loved by so many and maintained an interest in Scarborough years after he moved on to pastures new, attending the legends game events, held over the past three years.

"We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Neil's family and friends as we woke up to the very sad news this morning."
