TENNIS star Ryan Peniston is celebrating breaking into the world’s top 200 for the first time.

The Southend born 26-year-old has steadily worked his way up the rankings this season.

But the delighted Peniston remains hungry to get even higher.

“It’s a great feeling to be inside the top 200 for the first time,” said Peniston, who is based in Great Wakering.

“It’s been one of my goals and to put that tick next to it felt very nice.

“I do think it’s important to enjoy the milestones .

“But I’ve definitely got my sights set on more.”

Peniston - who played at Southend Lawn and Southend & Leisure Tennis Centre in his youth - has been consistent in his performances in recent months.

But he did endure a difficult start to the year.

“This year has had its ups and downs so far to be honest,” said Peniston.

“I had a tough start to the year by ending up one place out of the Australian Open qualifying.

“But I’ve managed to find some good form recently and I’m looking to carry it through to the end of the year. “

And next up for Peniston, the seventh highest ranked player from Great Britain, is a shot at the French Open.

“I’m going to be playing in the qualifying of the French Open this month and then I’ll be coming back to England for the grass season,” said Peniston.

“I hope to be competing in the grand slams and to keep rising in the rankings this year.

“The main goal for me is always to keep improving and I’ll keep on working as hard as I can to make sure that happens.”
