SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was happy long-serving defender John White got the send off he deserved from the Shrimpers.

White – who has been with Blues since 2013 – received a huge ovation when coming on a late substitute during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Torquay United.

And Maher was pleased White got the reception he deserved in what is expected to be his final game for the club.

“I’m delighted for Whitey and that he could get the recognition he deserves for everything he’s done for the club,” said Maher.

“I had it in the back of my mind that it was something I wanted to do but things don’t always pan out the way you want.

“He’s been a top servant and a great professional who deserves that kind of send off.

White has made 282 appearances for Blues and has his testimonial match at Roots Hall next Sunday.
