RYAN Leonard enjoyed many games in the middle for Southend United during his seven year spell with the Shrimpers.

But this weekend the former Blues midfielder will be experiencing it in a completely different way.

Leonard’s commitments to Millwall mean he is unable to play in Saturday’s match to remember Chris Barker at Roots Hall.

However, Leonard was keen to play a part in paying tribute to Barker who he formed a close friendship with during his early years with the Shrimpers.

“I would love to play in the game but it’s difficult for me because I can’t risk getting injured,” said Leonard.

“I was never going to miss it though.

“I knew Barks from when I was a young pro at Plymouth and then when I went on trial to Southend he was already there.

“I was 18, moving six hours away from home getting thrown in at the deep end really and he completely took me under his wing.

“We ended up living together and got really, really close.

“He was like an older brother to me.

“We used to go out and drink together, go for coffees and meals and at the training ground we’d always be together. “There were 10 years between us but we just clicked.

“He looked after me, showed me the ropes and any success I’ve had in my career is partly down to him.”

Leonard therefore jumped at the chance to return to Roots Hall on Saturday.

But officiating actually runs in his family!

“I have never reffed before but my cousin is a referee in National League South and my grandad has done it as well," said Leonard.

“Hopefully they will give me a few pointers, especially as Bilel (Mohsni) is playing.

"I definitely need to make sure we've got a red card!"

Saturday’s match, which is raising money for South East and Central Essex Mind, will see Barker’s former Southend side back together to take on a team made up of his former team-mates from other clubs he played for.
