SOUTHEND United striker Harry Cardwell will miss the start of the season with an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old had to be taken off at half-time of Blues’ 1-1 draw against Weymouth in May.

And Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher will still be without the forward when the National League campaign kicks off at the start of August.

“There’s still a lot of work to do with Harry,” said Maher.

“I don’t like to put timescales on these things really but he will miss the start of the season and a period just after that too I’d imagine.”

Cardwell joined Blues from Chorley in January and scored three goals in 14 games.
