ESSEX Eagles will be taking an aggressive approach into tonight’s Vitality Blast quarter-final clash at Lancashire, according to the in-form Paul Walter.

The former Billericay School pupil smashed an incredible 58 from just 23 balls to help Essex score a record breaking 254/5 in their 69 run win against Glamorgan on Saturday.

And Walter is certain Essex will be looking to get on the front foot again tonight.

“As a team we had a chat and decided that’s the way to go about it and it’s obviously pleasing the way it’s gone so far,” said Walter.

“Any time you play away against a team you don’t often play against it’s a different challenge but we will be looking to play in similar fashion.”

Essex will be heading into the contest on a high after Saturday’s eye-catching win against Glamorgan which included the Eagles hitting 31 off just one over.

Walter led the way with four sixes and thoroughly enjoyed his evening’s work.

“It was good fun,” said Walter.

“It’s good when you get going like that and the crowd at Chelmsford is great, especially on a Saturday night like it was.

“It was an impressive performance from everyone really from start to finish and it was very satisfying.”

Walter’s innings kept him top of Essex’s averages for the Blast this season having now hit 370 runs in his 12 visits to the crease.

The 28-year-old has also hit more sixes than any other Eagles player in the competition this season having cleared the ropes on 23 occasions.

But Walter is not getting carried away.

“You’re only as good as your next game,” said Walter.

“I’ll stick to the same processes and hopefully it can result in another big performance.”

However, Walter’s hard-hitting will not as come a surprise to those who have seen him playing his cricket closer to home.

“I still play my club cricket for Billericay,” said Walter.

“I haven’t managed to get out for a couple of years but I’m still attached to them and go to see the boys every now and then.

“My family’s house is still in Billericay too so it’s my local club but I did have a couple of years where I played for Hornchurch.

And that ultimately led to him earning another opportunity with Essex.

“I came through the system when I was younger but struggled with injuries,” recalled Walter.

“Then in about 2015 I had a really good year with Hornchurch and got called in.

“A couple of players had left Essex and it was just a case of being in the right place at the right time.”
