SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher opted not to risk a trio of his players against Canvey Island tonight.

Defenders Gus Scott-Morriss and Louis Lomas currently have slight knocks along with striker Sam Dalby.

And Maher chose not to call upon the three players against the Gulls.

“Louis Lomas, Gus and Sam Dalby didn’t play tonight but it was just a precaution,” explained Maher.

“Some of them are coming from part time football and it’s their first full pre-season day in, day out so it’s tough.

“It takes time to adjust and there will be ups and downs in pre-season.

“But it’s all about making sure we’re all ready for the first league game in August.

“There’s no point risking them and it gives us a chance to look at others too."
