TRIALIST strikers Chris Wreh and Ibby Akanbi pushed their claims for a contract at Southend United by both scoring at Kettering Town on Saturday.

The forwards also netted in Tuesday night’s 7-0 win at Canvey Island.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher admitted the strikers are doing all they can to impress in tough circumstances.

“As trialists it’s difficult because you’re coming into a group you don’t know,” said Maher.

“All you can do is try and affect things the best way you can by scoring goals and they both did that.”

Former Dagenham and Aldershot forward Akanbi put Blues in front during the first half against Kettering before Wreh – who was with Banbury last season – netted in the second half.

And Maher also handed an opportunity to winger Maxim Addo in the second half against the National League North side.

“Maxi was playing in Belgium last season and he showed glimpses when he came on too so I’m pleased with that as well,” said Maher.

“We will assess everyone today and go from there.”
