SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt there was 'lots to like' about the Shrimpers' performance at Colchester United.

A late header from U's striker John Akinde meant the Shrimpers had to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Community Stadium on Tuesday night.

But Maher was pleased with several aspects of his side's display.

"It was always going to be tough here, they’re a level up and a week ahead of us but I’m delighted with how we played,” said Maher.

“There’s lot to improve on but there’s lots to like too.

“The fitness looked good and everyone did well.”

League Two Colchester took the lead in the first half with Freddie Sears firing home but Maher was happy with how Blues fought back.

“They got in behind us a couple of times early on but it’s the first time the three have played together since last season,” said Maher.

“Sometimes it just takes a bit of time to iron things out and we thought we did it towards the end of the first half and the majority of the second half.

“The performance was good and we saw a lot of the things we want to see.”

The improvements saw the Shrimpers take a 2-1 lead with summer signings Dan Mooney and Cav Miley both on target.

Mooney has now netted four goals in three pre-season outings but Miley was a surprise scorer for Blues.

“Dan’s shown already what he can do and we knew what we were getting from him,” said Maher.

“You get goals and assists with him but with Cav most of the finishing we’ve done with him has been high and over the bar.

“He kept it down this time and that’s what happened so it’s pleasing and overall it was a good exercise.

And Maher also had praise for the youngsters he brought on in the second half with Jaden Crowhurst, Tommy Davis, Luke Reeve, Louis Arrowsmith and Oli Coker again handed opportunities to impress.

“The youngsters who came on didn’t show any fear and looked like they wanted to go on and win the game,” said Maher.

“I’m delighted with them and the attitude they showed.”

Blues continue their pre-season preparations at home to Gillingham this weekend.
