KEVIN Maher felt Southend United are another step towards being ready for the start of the season following Saturday’s pre-season clash with Gillingham.
A second half header from Mikael Mandron saw the Shrimpers suffer a 1-0 defeat at Roots Hall.
But Maher was pleased parts of the performance before also admitting improvements were needed in certain areas.
“It’s another step towards being ready for the start of the season which is the most important thing,” said Maher.
“We know the areas we’re looking for but I’m pleased with the work-out against a team in the league above and in the first half I thought we were good.”
However, Blues were unable to hit the back of the net against Roots Hall and Maher is still on the look out for another striker.
“It’s been well documented what we’re looking for,” said Maher.
“Harry Cardwell is out and so is Murph (Rhys Murphy) so it’s that area we’re in short in.
“But that’s taking nothing away from the lads out there because I thought they did well. “
