CALLUM Powell is pleased to be rekindling his partnership with Chris Wreh at Southend United.

The strikers, who teamed up for Powell’s goal at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, played together in their youth at Northampton Town.

And Powell is now relishing them being back together at Roots Hall.

“I played with Chris at Northampton when I was about 14 or 15 so I’ve got a good relationship with him and I’ve kept in touch with him over the years too,” said Powell.

“We played together before so he’s seen my run and played a great ball through for me to do my job and finish it off.

“I always like to look at positives so I’m happy to score and I’m feeling good.”

Blues were beaten 3-1 by Ipswich at Portman Road.

But Powell was encouraged by the performance against a strong side.

In the first half I thought we held our own against a very, very good League One side,” said Powell.

“They’ve got a good group of quality players but in the second half we had a few young boys out there and we held our own again.

“I felt we were on top in the second half and had them on the ropes for a little while.

“It shows the strength in depth we have now and the quality we have that we can compete with a League One side who will be bang at it this year.

“It’s testament to where we are and I still think there’s more to come.”

Blues complete their pre-season preparations with two matches in quick succession this weekend as they host Crystal Palace’s under 23 side on Friday night before visiting Concord Rangers the following day.

But Powell – who has scored five goals in pre-season- already feels in good shape.

“I’m in a good place,” said Powell.

“We’ve all worked hard in pre-season.

“It’s been very vigorous but it’s always worth it in the long run.

“I feel sharp and fit and want to hit the ground running when the season starts.”
