SOUTHEND United will complete their pre-season preparations with two games in quick succession this weekend.

The Shrimpers host Crystal Palace’s under 23 side at Roots Hall on Friday night before heading to National League South side Concord Rangers on Saturday.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher is looking to give as many players as possible a full 90 minutes.

“When we looked at pre-season and how we would go about it we wanted as many players as possible to get 90 minutes the week before the season starts so we’re ready,” said Maher.

“It will be a mixture of teams but we will get 90 minutes into everyone for what will be two good games.

“Friday nights under the lights at Roots Hall are always great so that will be good for the players to experience and then it’s a nice local one against Concord.

“That will be a tough one but we know there will be a decent surface there.

“Both games will be a tough test but will hopefully mean we’re ready come August 6.”

The Shrimpers, who kick off the forthcoming National League season against Boreham Wood at Roots Hall, have played six warm up matches so far.

And Maher is happy with how things are shaping up.

“I’ve been really pleased with everyone and credit must go to Stef (Russo) and how they run that department,” said Maher.

“On the whole we’re really pleased with everyone.

“The players look fit and sharp and it’s into the last bit now.

“We would obviously have liked more minutes for Gus Scott-Morriss and Louis Lomas bit fingers crossed they aren’t too far away.”

However, the defensive duo - who have missed the last five friendlies - are not yet ready to return.

“They will need to do a certain amount of work on the grass due to what they’ve missed before playing again,” said Maher.

“They will need to be built up again and these games will probably be too soon for them if I’m honest.”

Friday's match kicks off at 7.30pm with Saturday's starting at 3pm.
