SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was pleased with his young side’s performance against Concord Rangers.

The Shrimpers were beaten 2-1 at the Aspect Arena.

But Maher felt Blues put in a strong display.

“I thought all of them were outstanding,” said Maher.

“We’re playing a team the level below us who are a good, physical men’s side and they coped well with that.

“I thought we were on top on the first half and we had chances.”

And was particularly pleased with how Henry Sandat and goalscorer Max Fiddes performed in attack.

“I was delighted with all of them to be fair but the two young lads up front worked their socks off and showed good quality,” said Maher.

“It was a good goal too.

“Tom Davis has stepped out with the ball and we’ve managed to slide Jaden (Crowhurst) in.

“Max couldn’t really miss from there but he finished it well.

“I’m pleased with him and H as well.

“He worked his socks off, he’s a good size and has good quality.”

The clash with Concord was also Blues' final pre-season fixture of the summer.

And Maher is happy with how things are shaping up for the Shrimpers.

"We’re really pleased with pre-season and the fitness levels," said Maher.

"We know where we need to add to in terms of bodies and if we can get a couple more that would be great.

"Overall we’re pleased with everyone and there have been some really good signs but it’s all about what happens now.

"We know what we want to see and we can look forward to a good week of work ahead of Saturday's game with Boreham Wood."
